Globalization, demographics, economics, but especially, technology will force the change to happen. the question is truly whether we move towards addressing learning as it happens, and is happening,in real life, or do we continue to compartmentalize and offer courses in boring content focussed ways?

\nKids (and all of us)love to learn new things, relevant things, things that are important to the world, things that inspire passion and interest in us, and we all need\/want social interaction, especially teenagers.

\nIntegrating curriculum, teaching concepts (content can be found on the internet), using technology safely and as effective tool, and doing this through group projects (or individually if preferred by the student)that problem-solve real world concerns would captivate and engage our students completely! It would make the work of the teacher less onerous but would require the comnfort to become a learner along with the students, resources would be free and almost endless from the internet, content would be learned on students' own time as they applied concepts to solve real problems!

\nWouldn't school be exciting? Right now too many studens at secondary still attend only because they wish to be with their friends.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"17439151","dateCreated":"1259348056","smartDate":"Nov 27, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"Zula","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Zula","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/kootenayschoolleaders.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/17439151"},"dateDigested":1532389985,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Reshaping Education","description":"I agree that educatin as we know it will change and must change. I am starting to think of our very own students as "disruptive innovators" (more on that at a later date). I think this conversation with Toffler has some merit. Wondering if anyone has any comments?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"16028879","body":"I think we should look around for examples of schools that are changing. SD8 (Kootenay Lake) offers many programs of choice that move away from traditional classooom subjects. At My school, W.E.Graham there are two outdoor programs: in the 7\/8 class and the 9\/10 class. The 9\/10 class is called the Valhalla Wilderness program. These students go on 'out trips' every Fri. as well as 5 or 6 four day trips througout the year. Their studies also iclude wilderness first aid and avalanche training. The teacher that runs the program is also their SS and English teacher so he is able to connect those subjects to his outdoor curriculum. 'Lord of the Flies' takes on a whole new meaning when studied in this context.
\nI think there are more and more examples of these types of programs in schools and we should be looking for them and using these models as starting points for the type of change Toffler is talking about (but may not actually be seeing).","dateCreated":"1256698817","smartDate":"Oct 27, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"BrentCross","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/BrentCross","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"16067043","body":"Brent...yes more and more, and sometimes less and less because it is user pay in the form of academies etc. (ouch, that was a glass is half full comment). This is also what is unique about educating in a place like the Kootenays! I think you are talking about rich, highly engaging learning experiences for children that offer an experiential approach to learning. How about a dash of constructionism for good measure? That get's me all excited! Now, from my side of the coin...are the kids using g-maps to create mash-ups of their adventures to share with others around the world? or maybe it's video like "survivorman?" Kids so badly want to create and share their ideas with others.","dateCreated":"1256759974","smartDate":"Oct 28, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"pkinghorn","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/pkinghorn","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1222195038\/pkinghorn-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
